Dutch Work Contract Types Explained for KNM Learners
Understand permanent, temporary, and flexible contracts for KNM and daily life in the Netherlands.
Understanding Dutch work contracts is essential for the KNM exam and for navigating the job market in the Netherlands. Questions often describe a work situation and ask which type of contract applies, or what rights an employee has. Here is a complete overview of the main contract types and key employment terms.
Vast Contract (Permanent Contract)
A vast contract, also called a contract voor onbepaalde tijd, has no end date. This is the most secure form of employment in the Netherlands. Your employer cannot easily terminate a permanent contract — they must have a valid reason (such as reorganization or serious misconduct) and follow a legal procedure, either through the UWV or the kantonrechter (subdistrict court). There is always an opzegtermijn (notice period), which is typically one month for the employee and one to four months for the employer, depending on years of service.
Tijdelijk Contract (Temporary Contract)
A tijdelijk contract, or contract voor bepaalde tijd, has a fixed start and end date. When the end date arrives, the contract ends automatically unless renewed. Dutch law limits the use of temporary contracts: an employer may offer a maximum of 3 consecutive temporary contracts within a 3-year period. If the employer offers a fourth contract, or if the total duration exceeds 3 years, the contract automatically converts into a permanent contract (vast contract). This is known as the ketenregeling (chain rule).
Oproepcontract / Nul-urencontract (Zero-Hours Contract)
With a nul-urencontract, you have no guaranteed hours. The employer calls you when work is available, and you are paid only for hours worked. This type of contract offers less income stability. Under newer Dutch labor regulations, after 12 months of a zero-hours contract, the employer is obligated to offer a contract with a fixed number of hours based on the average hours worked in the previous year.
Uitzendcontract (Temp Agency Contract)
An uitzendcontract is a contract through an uitzendbureau (temporary employment agency) such as Randstad, Adecco, or Tempo-Team. You are formally employed by the agency, but you work at a different company (the inlener). Temp agency work is common as a way to enter the job market, especially for newcomers. After a certain period, the agency must offer a more permanent arrangement.
Proeftijd (Trial Period)
Most contracts allow for a proeftijd (trial period), during which either the employer or employee can end the contract immediately without giving a reason. For temporary contracts shorter than 2 years, the maximum trial period is 1 month. For permanent contracts or temporary contracts of 2 years or longer, the maximum is 2 months. Contracts of 6 months or shorter may not include a trial period at all.
Important Employment Terms
- CAO (Collectieve Arbeidsovereenkomst) — A collective labor agreement negotiated between employers and trade unions. Many sectors have a CAO that sets minimum conditions for salary, working hours, and leave.
- Vakantiedagen — By law, full-time employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 paid vacation days per year (based on a 5-day work week). Many CAOs provide additional days (typically 25).
- Vakantiegeld — Holiday pay, equal to 8% of your gross annual salary. Most employers pay this as a lump sum in May.
- Loonstrook — Your monthly payslip showing bruto (gross) salary, tax deductions, pension contributions, and netto (net) salary — the amount deposited in your bank account.
- Bruto vs. Netto — Bruto is your salary before taxes and premiums. Netto is what you actually receive. The difference goes to income tax (inkomstenbelasting) and social insurance premiums.
