In the Netherlands, there are several types of work contracts. The KNM exam often tests whether you understand the differences:
| Dutch Term | English | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Vast contract | Permanent contract | No end date (zonder einddatum) |
| Tijdelijk contract | Temporary contract | Has an end date (met een einddatum) |
| Nul-urencontract | Zero-hours contract | No guaranteed hours |
| Deeltijdbaan | Part-time job | Fewer hours than full-time — allowed in NL |
This is a very common KNM exam question:
When applying for a job in the Netherlands, you typically need:
Not needed for a job application: zorgpas (health insurance card). This is a common trick question on the exam.
If your contract ends and you have no work:
UWV helps with:
To start a business (eigen bedrijf), you must register at the Kamer van Koophandel (KvK) — the Chamber of Commerce.
AOV (Arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering): Disability insurance for self-employed people. It pays out when you're sick for a long time (langere tijd ziek).
Employers may require good Dutch writing skills only if necessary for the job (alleen als het nodig is voor de baan). They may require you to track your working hours. Agreements are often made about working hours (werktijden) and travel costs (reiskosten).
Uitzendbureau (temp agency) helps find temporary work. It is not for buying houses, housing registration, or inburgering requirements — it is an intermediary between workers and companies.
Vakbond (labor union) protects workers' rights; membership is not mandatory. Personeelsvereniging (staff association) organizes social activities for employees, not rules or hiring.
To have a foreign diploma recognized in the Netherlands, go to IDW (Informatiecentrum Diplomawaardering / Nuffic).
The MAP (Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie) is mandatory for integration — it helps prepare you for the Dutch job market.

A vast contract (permanent contract) has no end date (zonder einddatum). A tijdelijk contract (temporary contract) has an end date (met een einddatum). There are also nul-urencontracten (zero-hours contracts) with no guaranteed hours and deeltijdbanen (part-time jobs) with fewer hours than full-time work.
Brutosalaris is your gross salary before taxes. Nettosalaris is your net salary — what actually lands in your bank account. You always receive less than your bruto salary because the difference goes to taxes and social contributions.
When applying for a job in the Netherlands, you typically need a sollicitatiebrief (cover letter) and a CV (resume). You do not need a zorgpas (health insurance card) for a job application — this is a common trick on the KNM exam.
If your contract ends and you have no work, apply for a WW-uitkering (unemployment benefit) at UWV (Uitvoeringsinstituut Werknemersverzekeringen). You can apply starting one week before your contract ends.
The KvK (Kamer van Koophandel) is the Chamber of Commerce, where you must register if you start your own business (eigen bedrijf). Regular employees (werknemers) do not register at KvK.
