If you’re preparing for the KNM (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij) exam in 2025 or 2026, you want to know what actually matters: what changed, what to study, and how to pass without wasting time. Here’s a straight guide.

What the KNM Exam Is (2025–2026 Format)

The KNM exam is one of the required parts of the Dutch inburgering exam. It tests your practical knowledge of Dutch society — not language level. You see short video scenarios and answer multiple-choice questions about what the person in the video should do.

  • 40 questions, all multiple choice
  • Video-based: you watch a situation, then choose the right action or answer
  • Pass mark: you need at least 28 correct (70%)
  • Language: the exam is in Dutch, so knowing key vocabulary per topic helps a lot

This format has been in place for the current inburgering law; DUO can adjust topics and scenarios over time, so using current study materials and the official DUO practice exam is important.

What to Study for KNM in 2025 and 2026

The exam still covers the same eight topic areas. What “changed” for 2025/2026 is mainly that older guides may be out of date; the topic list itself is stable:

  1. Healthcare (most tested) — huisarts, 112, apotheek, insurance, consultatiebureau
  2. Work and income — contracts, UWV, salary, starting a business
  3. Government and institutions — DigiD, BSN, gemeente, Belastingdienst, DUO, SVB
  4. Housing — renting, social housing, utilities, energy
  5. Education — schools, DUO student finance, MBO/HBO/WO
  6. Politics and democracy — voting, parliament, rights
  7. History and geography — key events, provinces, Delta Works
  8. Dutch culture and traditions — holidays, customs, daily life

Study in that order if you’re short on time. Healthcare and government/work come up most often and are the easiest to mix up (e.g. when to go to the huisarts vs 112, or UWV vs gemeente vs Belastingdienst).

How to Pass the KNM Exam Fast

Step 1 — Use a free, up-to-date guide.
Work through all eight topics with a free KNM study guide that explains each area in English and lists the main Dutch terms. No need to pay for a course just for KNM content.

Step 2 — Take the DUO practice exam.
Do the official KNM practice exam on the DUO/inburgering website. It shows the real question style and reveals which topics you don’t know yet.

Step 3 — Fix your gaps.
Focus extra time on the topics where you made mistakes. Use the KNM topic pages (e.g. healthcare, work and income) to review and then test again.

Step 4 — Learn “who does what”.
Many questions are “where should this person go?” or “which organization handles this?”. Memorise a short “who does what” list: huisarts for non-emergency health, 112 for emergency, gemeente for registration and IDs, UWV for unemployment, Belastingdienst for tax and allowances, DUO for student finance, etc. The main KNM guide has a quick-reference table for this.

Step 5 — Repeat weak topics.
In the last 1–2 weeks before the exam, do short daily reviews of your weakest topic and run through practice questions again.

Common Mistakes When Preparing for KNM

  • Relying on old material. Use guides that are updated for the current exam (e.g. 2025/2026).
  • Only reading, never practising. Use the DUO practice exam and scenario-style questions.
  • Confusing institutions. Spend time on the difference between DUO, UWV, gemeente, Belastingdienst, SVB, and when to use 112 vs huisarts.
  • Ignoring Dutch vocabulary. Even though KNM is “knowledge”, the questions are in Dutch; learn the key terms per topic.
