Work and Income in the Netherlands

Everything you need to know about employment, salaries, benefits, and starting a business in the Netherlands.

Types of Employment Contracts

In the Netherlands, there are several types of work contracts. The KNM exam often tests whether you understand the differences:

Dutch Term English Description
Vast contract Permanent contract No end date (zonder einddatum)
Tijdelijk contract Temporary contract Has an end date (met een einddatum)
Nul-urencontract Zero-hours contract No guaranteed hours
Deeltijdbaan Part-time job Fewer hours than full-time — allowed in NL

Salary: Bruto vs Netto

This is a very common KNM exam question:

  • Brutosalaris = Gross salary (before taxes)
  • Nettosalaris = Net salary (what you receive in your bank account)
  • You always receive less than your bruto salary (minder dan bruto)
  • The difference goes to taxes and social contributions

Job Applications (Solliciteren)

When applying for a job in the Netherlands, you typically need:

  • Sollicitatiebrief — cover letter
  • CV / Curriculum Vitae — resume

Not needed for a job application: zorgpas (health insurance card). This is a common trick question on the exam.

Unemployment Benefits (Uitkering)

If your contract ends and you have no work:

  • Apply for a WW-uitkering (unemployment benefit)
  • You can apply starting one week before your contract ends
  • Apply at UWV (Uitvoeringsinstituut Werknemersverzekeringen)

UWV helps with:

  • Unemployment benefits
  • Courses to find work (cursus om werk te vinden)
  • Disability benefits

Starting Your Own Business

To start a business (eigen bedrijf), you must register at the Kamer van Koophandel (KvK) — the Chamber of Commerce.

  • Only business owners register at KvK
  • Regular employees (werknemers) do NOT register at KvK

AOV (Arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering): Disability insurance for self-employed people. It pays out when you're sick for a long time (langere tijd ziek).

Employer Rights and Other Topics

Employers may require good Dutch writing skills only if necessary for the job (alleen als het nodig is voor de baan). They may require you to track your working hours. Agreements are often made about working hours (werktijden) and travel costs (reiskosten).

Uitzendbureau (temp agency) helps find temporary work. It is not for buying houses, housing registration, or inburgering requirements — it is an intermediary between workers and companies.

Vakbond (labor union) protects workers' rights; membership is not mandatory. Personeelsvereniging (staff association) organizes social activities for employees, not rules or hiring.

To have a foreign diploma recognized in the Netherlands, go to IDW (Informatiecentrum Diplomawaardering / Nuffic).

The MAP (Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie) is mandatory for integration — it helps prepare you for the Dutch job market.
