A2 Dutch Linking Words Guide: want, en, maar, daarom
All the linking words in Dutch you need for A2 writing. Clear examples, word order rules, and a cheat sheet for want, omdat, maar, dus, and daarom.
Linking words connect sentences and make your writing flow naturally. At A2 level, you do not need many linking words, but you must use the ones you choose correctly. The most important thing to understand is that different linking words affect word order in different ways.
Coordinating Conjunctions (No Word Order Change)
These words connect two main clauses. The word order in the second clause stays normal: subject + verb.
en (and)
- Ik werk op maandag en ik heb op dinsdag vrij.
- Hij kookt het eten en zij dekt de tafel.
maar (but)
- Ik wil komen, maar ik heb geen tijd.
- Het weer is koud, maar de zon schijnt.
want (because)
- Ik blijf thuis, want ik ben ziek.
- Zij neemt de bus, want haar fiets is kapot.
of (or)
- Wil je koffie of wil je thee?
- We gaan maandag of we gaan dinsdag.
dus (so)
- Ik heb koorts, dus ik ga niet werken.
- De winkel is dicht, dus we gaan morgen.
Subordinating Conjunctions (Verb Goes to the End)
These words start a subclause. In the subclause, the verb moves to the end of the sentence. This is the most important grammar rule for these words.
omdat (because)
- Ik blijf thuis, omdat ik ziek ben.
- Hij is blij, omdat hij een nieuwe baan heeft.
als (if / when)
- Als het morgen mooi weer is, gaan we naar het park.
- Ik bel je, als ik thuis ben.
dat (that)
- Ik denk dat hij morgen komt.
- Zij zegt dat het eten klaar is.
toen (when — past tense)
- Toen ik klein was, woonde ik in Amsterdam.
- Hij was blij, toen hij het nieuws hoorde.
voordat (before)
- Ik eet ontbijt, voordat ik naar mijn werk ga.
- Bel mij, voordat je vertrekt.
nadat (after)
- Nadat ik had gegeten, ging ik naar buiten.
- Zij ging slapen, nadat de film was afgelopen.
Adverbs That Affect Word Order
These words are not conjunctions, but they often start the second sentence. When they come first, the verb comes directly after them (inversion: adverb + verb + subject).
daarom (therefore)
- Ik ben ziek. Daarom blijf ik thuis.
- Het regent hard. Daarom nemen we de auto.
daarna (after that)
- Ik ga naar de supermarkt. Daarna ga ik koken.
- Eerst doe ik de was. Daarna maak ik het huis schoon.
ook (also)
- Hij spreekt Nederlands. Hij spreekt ook Engels.
- Ik ga naar de markt. Mijn buurman gaat ook.
dan (then)
- Eerst eet ik. Dan ga ik naar school.
- Als je klaar bent, dan kun je gaan.
Want vs. Omdat: When to Use Which
Both want and omdat mean “because,” but they work differently.
With want, the word order stays normal: Ik blijf thuis, want ik ben ziek. This is easier at A2 level because you do not need to move the verb.
With omdat, the verb moves to the end: Ik blijf thuis, omdat ik ziek ben. This sounds slightly more formal and is also very common, but you must remember the verb-final rule.
If you are unsure, use want. It is accepted at A2 level and reduces the chance of a word order mistake.
